Carraweelo, who is also known as Elba Awad, was a Somalian Queen who was greatly feared by her people due to her eccentricities. Arawailo or Weelo-Weelo(the way I heard her whisper her name to me) believed that women were just as smart as the men, could do anything just like men, and felt that women should have a voice in the governing of the tribe. She fought for female empowerment. The story goes that when she became queen, under her reign, she punished men by torturing their tesitcles. Other forms of punishment were hanging them by their testicles and even castrating men. It was her way of maintaining her status as these men could not bear children (boys who turn to men) and could one day take her place.
